KATHMANDU, Aug 16: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated preparations to revoke the permits of institutional schools registered under its jurisdiction but not currently in operation.

According to KMC’s Education Department, on-site inspections of such schools are being conducted and further procedures for cancellation will follow. KMC Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol informed that alternative schools — Mahila Jyoti, Jayana and James Model — have been granted relocation approval.

She added that permission has been granted for the renaming of 25 schools. Matters such as the addition of grades and subjects in community and private schools, name and location changes, ownership transfers, cancellation of non-operational schools’ permits and relocation of alternative schools are currently under discussion in KMC’s Education Committee.

Rani Devi Secondary School in Ranibari has been permitted to operate up to Grade 10 starting from the academic session 2025/26. Similarly, Pashupati Mitra, Geetamata, Janakalyan, Janapath and Nepal Adarsha Secondary School have been allowed to add Civil and Computer Engineering subjects in Grade XII under the technical stream.

KMC is also preparing to grant permission for 12 institutional schools to add new grades and subjects. Likewise, 21 schools that submitted documents for name changes have been granted approval. For the relocation of institutional schools, necessary criteria are being prepared and will be presented at the next Education Committee meeting.

Additionally, KMC has tasked the Education and Health Committee to submit a report within 15 days on the budget for the education sector for fiscal year 2025/26, as well as on the relevance, effectiveness, and possible revisions of the "Book-Free Friday" program.

To improve community schools, a task force under the coordination of Dr. Suraj Raj Kafle has been formed. The task force will present a report with recommendations on school operation standards, social and resource mapping, physical infrastructure, educational quality, and long-term education planning. KMC has also stated that the Education Department will carry out studies for the documentation of Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs and their registration under formal statutes.
