NEPALGUNJ, Nov 10: Tika BK, 40, of Tewang-8 in Rolpa district gave birth to four babies on Tuesday. “However, the youngest died when we had almost reached Nepalgunj,” her husband Tukman BK said.

According to Tukman, Tika immediately went into labor again after she gave birth to the first baby, a son. She was then taken to the district hospital, a two hours´ distance from their home. [break]

After Tika gave birth to three more babies at the district hospital, she was brought to Bheri Zonal Hospital in Nepalgunj for better care and protection. The other three she has given birth to are daughters.

Tika is now resting with her three surviving babies and is in good health, heath workers at the zonal hospital said. “The mother and babies are all in good health,” nurse Anita Pokhrel said. Upon learning that Tika had given birth to four babies at one go, people queued up at the hospital to see the babies. “Birth of four babies at the same time was never heard of, and has amazed us all,” Pokhrel said. All the babies were delivered in normal fashion, Pokhrel said.

Tukman BK, a farmer by occupation, said he had to collect Rs. 6,000 to take the mother and her babies to Nepalgunj. Tukman, who had wished for a son, did not imagine that his wife would give him quadruplets.

Doctors said that the birth of four babies at the same time is rare. Of the three BK babies that have survived, the first-born weighs 1 kg while the other two weigh 1.5 kg and 1.25 kg respectively. All the babies are breastfeeding with the mother. However, since the mother´s milk is not enough, health workers are also feeding milk to the newborn.
