Speaker urges govt to address teachers' demands

KATHMANDU, April 15: Speaker Devraj Ghimire of the House met with Minister for Education, Science and Technology Bidya Bhattarai and Chhabilal Bishwakarma, coordinator of the School Education Sub-committee under the Education Committee, to review the government's preparations and the committee's progress in addressing the demands of protesting teachers.


During the Friday meeting, Minister Bhattarai said the government and teachers had engaged in dialogue and that both the Cabinet and the Ministry were ready to make immediate decisions. She confirmed that the government would table the Education Bill in Parliament during the first week of the upcoming session. She also said she had discussed the matter with the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, as the issue of teachers' benefits involves the Ministry of Finance.

Coordinator Bishwakarma reported that the sub-committee had already reviewed 82 of the 163 clauses in the bill and had reached conclusions. He assured the Speaker that the sub-committee would submit its report to the committee within the allotted 35 days.


The Speaker urged both the government and the committee to treat the teachers' demands with seriousness and take prompt action.
