KAILALI, March 5: Akkal Bahadur Rawal, Provincial Assembly member of Sudur Paschim Province representing the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), has been arrested by police in an attempt to rape case on Wednesday.

Kailali police has taken the lawmaker into custody acting on a complaint filed by a woman in Kailali. Rawal was elected from Achham-2 (B) in 2017 provincial assembly election representing the erstwhile CPN (Maoist Center). He was appointed at the party's whip for provincial assembly.

Police had issued an arrest warrant against Rawal following complaint from the victim on February 26. A married woman in district headquarters Dhangadhi had registered an attempt to rape case against Rawal at the District Police Office on February 4, said DSP Dakshya Kumar Basnet.

“He himself appeared at the police office following the arrest warrant,” Basnet said. “We are still investigating the case. He will be presented before the court on Thursday for permission to take him under custody for further investigation.”

However, Rawal has denied the allegation stating that it was just a conspiracy against him.

The arrest of Rawal comes just four months after Social Development Minister Dirgha Sodari of the same province was sacked from the position following accusations of misbehaving with a woman and other allegations.
