KATHMANDU, Nov 19: Police on Friday rescued a Kathmandu ward office secretary from the captivity of locals who had held him at a shopping complex on corruption charges.

Locals had fastened Shiva Raj Soti, the secretary of Kathmandu Ward No 10 office, with a string tied to a chair inside a room of RB Complex at Khichapokhari before the police intervened to set him free. [break]

Locals have accused Soti of mishandling a dispute related to the land where the business complex stands.

Among 35 people held from the place, only five have been taken into custody on public offence charges.

“We released the remaining 30 after making them sign papers that they would appear before the police as and when required,” said DSP Lalmani Acharya of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu.

Following the incident, Khichapokhari area remained tense throughout the day. Traders had even shut down their shops protesting detention of locals and staffers of the complex.
