KATHMANDU, Nov 28: Nepal Student Union (NSU), the students' wing of the main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC), has announced to hold its general convention on January 12.

An emergency meeting of the NSU Central Working Committee held on Tuesday decided to hold the general convention amid allegation from the rival faction that the establishment faction was delaying to hold general convention. The three-day convention will elect new CWC of the students' wing.

NSU President Nain Singh Mahar said that the decision was made to strengthen the students' organization as there is a need to fight against totalitarianism of the government.

As per the schedule publicized by the NSU meeting, NSU conventions in schools, higher secondary schools and campuses outside Kathmandu Valley are scheduled to be completed by December 9. Similarly, there is a plan to conclude village level and municipal level NSU conventions by December 11.

According to the calendar publicized by the NSU, there are plans to hold general convention of the students' body in Kathmandu Valley-based campuses by December 23. The election of NSU general representatives shall be concluded by January 4.

Earlier, the NC CWC meeting had decided to extend the term of current NSU CWC for two months to hold its general convention. The NSU CWC meeting on Tuesday decided to hold its general convention within the deadline announced by the NC CWC meeting.

Although the establishment faction of NSU announced the date for the general convention, the rival faction within the NSU says this is just a ploy to avoid the party's upcoming Mahasamiti meeting, where the issue of sister organization is also likely to surface.

“How is it possible to hold the convention within the next 50 days when there has not been convention of any district committee yet?” asked a leader from the rival faction, seeking anonymity.

Rival faction leaders argue that the district level conventions and the convention of college level units of the students' body should have already been held by now.

“This is purely an attempt to buy time to extend the term of NSU CWC further,” claimed the leader.
