Nepal to celebrate diamond jubilee of first Everest ascent

KATHMANDU, May 22: The government is organizing various programs to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the first ascent of the Mt Everest.

“On May 26, International Everest Conference will be held in Khumjung, tree plantation program will be carried out at Hillary Park and paper presentation will be made by experts on mountaineering and climate change,” Subash Nirola, officiating CEO of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), told a press meet on Wednesday.



National and international experts in tourism and mountaineering have been invited to attend the conference. Similarly, meeting of Sagarmatha Tourism Coordination Forum with the local stakeholders will be held in Khumjung on May 27. On the same day, a photo exhibition on Mt. Everest will be inaugurated at NTB. The photo exhibition will continue until June 1. [break]



Likewise, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation will distribute Tenzing-Hillary Award on May 28. Similarly, winners of Mt Everest Diamond Jubilee Essay competition will also be awarded on the same day. Journalists Association for Tourism-Nepal is organizing Heritage run in Kathmandu Durbar Square. Trekking Agencies´ Association of Nepal (TAAN) will hand over four different awards - TAAN Sagarmatha Journalist Award, TAAN Sagarmatha Dr Harka Gurung Award TAAN Sagarmatha Pasang Lamhu Award and TAAN Sagarmatha Pema Doma Education Award - on the same day.

Souvenirs of TAAN and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) will also be released on the same day.



On May 29, a colorful procession will be taken out from NTB premises. The procession will conclude at Kathmandu Durbar Square. Similarly, Everest Diamond Jubilee Celebration medal distribution ceremony will be held at Narayanhity Palace. A gala dinner in honor of Everest summiteers will also be held at Narayanhity Palace on the same day.



Purnachandra Bhattarai, joint secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation said that the government has set aside Rs 30 million to organize various activities in Kathmandu and the Khumbu region to celebrate the 60th year of the first ascent of Mt Everest.

The government has decided to waive off royalty fee to climb mountains in the mid and far western regions for the next five years.
