"We at the meeting today decided to stage protest at all our 86 chapters across the country on March 18 demanding Regmi´s resignation from the post of chief justice," NBA General Secretary Sunil Pokharel told Republica.[break]
The umbrella organization of lawyers from across the country has been consistently opposing the proposal to form election government under the leadership of sitting chief justice arguing that holding the post of executive head by the same person who heads the judiciary as well seriously jeopardizes the basic democratic principle of separation of powers among the three branches of the government -- legislative, executive and judiciary.
NBA has vowed to continue its protest until Regmi quits from the post of chief justice.
"If our demand is not addressed, we will submit a memorandum to Regmi, in his capacity as government head, seeking his resignation from the post of chief justice," he added.
The lawyers are for planning more protests by holding discussions at the two-day meeting of NBA delegates that is scheduled for the last week of May. "If our demand is not met by the last week of May, we will decide about the next protest program from the same meeting, which will be attended by over 500 lawyers," he said.
Earlier on Thursday, an emergency meeting of the NBA, had termed the 11-point deal reached among the major political forces on formation of CJ-led government as "unconstitutional" and "unacceptable".
The NBA officials and a section of lawyers have also accused Regmi of tarnishing the image of the apex court by holding meetings with the parties that are parties in a sub-judice case that is filed against the proposal to appoint Regmi as prime minister.
In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday when Regmi was sworn-in as the head of government, NBA declared Thursday as a black day in the history of judiciary in Nepal.
