Nagakot takes on a deserted look following the massive earthquake

Bhaktapur, May 13: The once teeming hotels in Nagarkot, the renowned tourist hub of the Kathmandu Valley, showcasing the picturesque Himalayan range, has now gone still and silent following the massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake on April 25 and relentless ripples of powerful aftershocks which has killed more than 8,000.The hotels that are usually filled with foreign and domestic tourists at this time of the year in particular are now witnessing a draught in business which is unlikely to bounce back anytime soon. Another powerful aftershock measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale which struck yesterday has sealed any chances of the business returning to its usual stature in immediate future.

Majority of the hotels and resorts at Nagarkot which lies at the north-eastern border of Bhaktapur and Kavre districts have been leveled by the quakes and the arrival of tourists has come to a grinding halt.

The Naldum Tourism Development Committee Chairman Deepak Lamichhane said 12 big hotels have been razed to the ground while other seven hotels have suffered extensive damages rendering them inhabitable.

He said Hotel Snowman, Hotel Spa Mountain, Naldum Village Resort, Hotel View Point, Hotel Green Valley, Panorama View and The Fort Resort have turned into rubbles while Hotel Unkai Resort, The Niva Pvt, Hotel Chautari, Club Himalaya among others have also suffered partial damages. The hotel entrepreneurs say the hotels with partial damages could be brought back into business after necessary repair works.
