PARSA, Sept 1: There has been a significant increase in the import of motorcycles through the Birgunj Customs point, the country's main trading post. There has been a decrease in the import of jeeps and cars using this border point.
Compared to the Shrawan month of the last fiscal year 2023-24, there has been a decrease of 40 percent in the import of jeeps and cars during the same period of the current fiscal year. During that period, the import of motorcycles has increased by 100 percent.
Birgunj Customs collects Rs 236.31 billion as revenue
Raghu Lal Karn, information officer of Birgunj Customs Office, said that 3,571 motorcycles worth Rs 467.7 million were imported through the Birgunj border crossing in the month of Shrawan of the last fiscal year.
A total of 7,150 motorcycles worth Rs 944.8 million have been imported in the Shrawan month of the current fiscal year.
According to the data provided by the Birgunj Customs Office, 127 units of jeeps and cars worth Rs 206 million were imported in the month of Shrawan of the previous year, while only 76 units worth Rs 144.4 million were imported in the Shrawan month of the current fiscal year.
Information Officer Karn said that the increase in imports was due to the government providing a 50 percent discount on revenue to importers who assemble petrol-powered motorcycles in Nepal while importing spare parts from India and third countries.
In the previous fiscal year's Shrawan, revenue collection from motorcycle imports was Rs 442.1 million. The office said that Rs 886.4 million was collected in revenue during the current fiscal year.
