KATHMANDU, March 24: Authorities have intensified efforts to fully operate Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA). The GBIA's General Manager, Pratap Babu Tiwari, said officials have developed a work plan in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and other relevant agencies.

"We have prepared a work plan and are coordinating with the authorities and all concerned agencies to operationalize Gautam Buddha International Airport," Tiwari said. "We introduced various incentive programs in the initial phase to attract airlines to the airport."

Tiwari added that officials are promoting the airport by keeping passenger fares competitive and enhancing market visibility. They are also working to simplify labor approvals, medical examinations, and visa procedures to improve passenger convenience. He stressed the need for strong collaboration among all stakeholders to sustain the summer flight schedule and establish the airport as a reliable hub.

The government has launched several initiatives to ensure the airport's sustainable operation. The Cabinet decided to facilitate labor approvals and medical check-ups from Bhairahawa, establish a visa center, and implement suitable business strategies through CAAN. Meanwhile, Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, met with stakeholders on March 22 to discuss long-term strategies for the airport's operation.

Implementation of RNP-AR System

In the past, adverse weather conditions forced authorities to cancel flights due to the lack of an Instrument Landing System (ILS). To address this issue, the airport has implemented a satellite-based Required Navigation Performance-Authorization Required (RNP-AR) landing system. The new system is expected to make landings easier for airlines equipped with suitable aircraft and trained crews.

According to airport statistics, passenger numbers have increased significantly since regular flights resumed in October 2024. In 2024, 8,157 passengers used the airport, while between January and March 20, 2025, the number had already reached 13,181. Officials believe this growth signals positive progress in flight operations.
