UDAYAPUR, Nov 11: The major political parties, including the Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, and CPN (Maoist Center), have finalized their candidates for the vacant ward chairperson positions in the upcoming by-election in Udayapur.
The by-election scheduled for December 1 will fill the two vacant ward chair positions in Udayapur- Triyuga Municipality-12 and Belaka Municipality-9.
The NC has decided to field Sanjiv Kafle in Triyuga-12, while the UML has nominated Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary. The Maoist Centre had previously chosen Nabin Kumar Rai as their candidate.

Similarly, for Belaka-9, the NC is backing Nabin Basnet, the UML has selected Manoj Khadka, and the Maoist Center has decided to field Bharat Ghimire.
Khagendra Rai, the NC regional president responsible for ward ticket distribution, stated that the selection process was lengthy due to multiple aspirants. UML District Chairman Bhagwat Raut said they had chosen the most suitable candidates among those recommended. The Maoist Center's District Coordination Committee Coordinator Binod Katuwal noted that although there were many aspiring candidates, they selected the canditates unanimously following discussions from earlier meetings.
In the 2022 election, Chudaraj Kafle, elected as the chairperson of Triyuga-12 from the NC, perished in a bike accident in March on the day of Shivaratri. The newly selected candidate, Sanjiv, is his son.
There are 3,640 registered voters in the Triyuga Municipality-12.
Similarly, the chairman of Belaka Municipality-9, Padam Bahadur Khadka, elected from the NC, also died in a motorcycle accident in May. The UML has now fielded his brother Manoj Khadka in the election. The Khadka family has five brothers, with Padam being the only NC member, while the eldest, second, and fourth brothers are with the UML, and the youngest is aligned with the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Belaka Municipality-9 has a total of 3,100 registered voters.
