Kathmandu Valley ranks second globally as air quality deteriorates again

Air pollution levels in the Kathmandu Valley have once again risen to a high level. According to the latest records, Kathmandu currently ranks as the second most polluted city in the world.

KATHMANDU, April 17: Air pollution levels in the Kathmandu Valley have once again risen to a high level. According to the latest records, Kathmandu currently ranks as the second most polluted city in the world.


As per data from the international air quality monitoring organization IQAir, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Kathmandu was 161 as of 11:25 am, indicating an unhealthy level of air pollution.

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, currently ranks as the most polluted city in the world with an AQI of 169, a level considered unhealthy for human health.


Kathmandu follows closely behind in second place, with an AQI of 161. According to the air quality classification approved by the Government of Nepal, an AQI of 0–50 is considered good, 51–100 is moderate, 101–150 is unhealthy for sensitive groups, 151–200 is unhealthy, 201–300 is very unhealthy, and above 301 is deemed hazardous.


Both Dhaka and Kathmandu fall under the unhealthy category, indicating that the air quality poses health risks to the general population.
