Let’s ride

According to the data published by Department of Transport Management (DoTM), more than four hundred thousand vehicles were registered in the last fiscal year, leaving the total number of vehicles to 3.22 million by 2017/18; 2.5 million of which are motorcycles alone.

No doubt the numbers have enlarged since the data is a year old. And due to the increasing numbers, the traffic is always congested, sometimes leading to lethal accidents. From a bird’s-eye view, the people prefer motorbikes to environment supporter transportation – bicycles.

If you ride around the valley, you might have experienced the unsystematic roads. Given the fact that the capital is a victim of road accidents and pollutions, there are some people working to make the city cycle-friendly. Ratna Ram Shrestha is one of them. Shrestha is a cycle-activist and the founder of Nepal Cycle Society.

He believes that a cycle-friendly city helps non-cyclists as well. “First of all, the cycle-friendly city is fully against air pollution and traffic congestion. Besides that, the  city will also feature systemized footpaths.”
