Japan-UNDP collaboration advances climate action and resilience in Jajarkot

The event brought together officials from all levels of government, development partners, and municipal representatives.

SURKHET, Dec 4: The Office of Chief Minister and Council of Ministers (OCMCM), supported by the Government of Japan and the UNDP, organized a national workshop titled ‘Enhancing Human Security through Local Climate Actions’, underscoring local efforts to tackle climate challenges and strengthen disaster resilience in Jajarkot, Karnali Province. The event brought together officials from all levels of government, development partners, and municipal representatives.


According to a press release issued by the Embassy, the initiative focuses on adaptive agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and early warning systems in one of Nepal's most vulnerable regions. Jajarkot, with a Human Development Index of 0.393, faces compounded challenges from poverty, disasters, and climate change.

The project, which began in March 2023 and runs through December 2024, trained over 40 community members in search and rescue operations. These volunteers played a critical role during the response to the Jajarkot earthquake in November 2023. The release highlighted that the project has also supported earthquake recovery efforts by providing energy solutions to affected communities in Jajarkot and West Rukum Districts.


Takahiro Tamura, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Japan, expressed gratitude for the partnership and noted the project's success in enhancing community resilience. Similarly, Kyoko Yokosuka, UNDP’s Resident Representative, emphasized the importance of leaving no one behind in climate action, thanking the Government of Japan for its generous support, the press release stated.


The workshop also featured the launch of a photo book, Building Resilience for Strengthening Human Security, which showcases collaborative efforts under the project. According to the press release, the initiative aligns with the Climate Promise and the Paris Agreement's goals, demonstrating Japan and UNDP’s shared commitment to accelerating climate action in Nepal.
