KATHMANDU, Oct 7: ‘Janayuddha Jari Chha?’ is a story based on the events that took place during the Maoist insurgency period. Written and directed by Raj Shah, the play is a blend of love, hatred, sorrows, and hope.

Unlike other plays, this play doesn’t have chorus or lead characters. The hour-long drama portrays the situation of the country and the struggles when the country was at war. Like the title suggests, the drama shows the story of uncertainties of all sides -- the rebels, security forces, and the victims. The acting, script, and directorial are the highlights of the play. Additionally, it also flaunts a decent light sequence and uses metaphorical props. The quick changes and adaptation of actors from one scene to another have been executed flawlessly.

Talking about the play, writer/director Raj Shah expressed, “Since most of the people have witnessed, or heard about the war, I tried to making the play different by using several props.” Further explaining, he said, “Though my play is based on the insurgency period, I have tried explaining the stories of every party involved.”

The play is a six-year-long effort. He explained, “I wrote this play long time back.  But after researching about the war, I found many flaws. I spent my time researching about the war and meeting former rebels and security forces,” he added.

The actors have shown versatility; each actor portrays several roles -- of a rebel, security force, and the victim party. Actor Mukesh Hamal said that he had researched on the lifestyle of the rebels to imitate their character. Likewise, the director, who is also an actor in the play, said, “I didn’t hand out the scripts to the actors for a month even after their selection. I encouraged them to conduct outer and inner physical works to get into the character.”
