KATHMANDU, June 15: United Nations Director of Political Affairs for Asia and the Pacific Samuel Tamrat said on Monday that the longer the integration of the Maoist combatants remains unanswered, the greater will be the danger to the peace process.

Talking to mediapersons at Tribhuvan International Airport before his departure, Tamrat said, "The selection period of the Maoist combatants has passed and the second phase has to start." He, however, added that nothing concrete has been done to start the next phase which should include integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.

He added that all should work together to create "a conducive environment" for completion of peace process in Nepal.

Tamrat said that he came to Nepal to assist UNMIN chief Karin Landgren and to urge the political leaders to move ahead and address vital issues facing Nepal´s peace process, especially the future of the Maoist soldiers. Furthermore, he said that UNMIN´s role will remain important as long as the peace process is taken to its logical conclusion.

Stating that there is no alternative to cooperation and consensus among the major political parties, Tamrat said that from his meetings with the prime minister and other political leaders he came to know that they were all committed to the peace process.

Tamrat arrived in Kathmandu on June 9 on a six-day visit. On Sunday, he had flown to New Delhi for a day´s visit. He came back to Kathmandu on Sunday itself.
