Submitting a memorandum to Chief District Officer (CDO) of Darchula, Krishna Shyam Budhathoki on Friday the locals said the embankment, if constructed, would change the natural course of the river and eventually cause erosion of land on the Nepali side. [break]
According to the locals, India is constructing the embankment just 300 meters from a suspension bridge that connects Khalanga with an Indian town of Dharchula. They say the river will pose a threat to Khalanga if the embankment is constructed.
“The river has already started changing its course toward the Nepali side,” says Tarka Raj Awasthi, a resident of Khalanga-4. “The river will sweep us away in the rainy season if the embankment is constructed.”
A country requires the consent of its neighbor to build any embankment along a river that flows as a border line. However, India has not informed Nepal about the construction of embankment along the Mahakali River.
“We have not been informed about the construction,” said Darchula CDO Adhikari. “We have written to the home ministry regarding this issue.”
