KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Torrential downpour on Tuesday night caused flooding in various places in the capital and also blocked highways in different parts of the country. One person died in Kathmandu while two were washed away by a flooded river in Bhojpur.
The life of the people in river corridors of Kathmandu came to a standstill on Wednesday morning due to floods in the rivers. According to Dan Bahadur Karki, spokesperson for Nepal Police, 12 people were rescued from Kathmandu, while 24 people were rescued from Lalitpur.
Of those rescued from Kathmandu, 11 were rescued from the Kuleshwar and Balkhu area and one person from the New Bus Park area.
The areas in Balkhu, vegetable market, Bafal, Dhobi Khola corridor, Sundari Ghat in Kathmandu were inundated. Additionally, a house was damaged due to a landslide that occurred in Nagpokhari of Futung, in the northyern outskirts of Kathmandu. The areas around the New Bus Park and Miteri Bridge were inundated.
In Lalitpur, two were rescued from the UN Park, eight from Sundari Ghat, one from Balkumari Bridge, seven from Changathali, Mahalaxmi Municipality-8 and six from Ram Mandir of Mahalaxmi Municipality.
Man dies in Balkhukhola flood
A man died in a flood that occurred in Balkhukhola on Tuesday night. Police said that the dead body of Ram Swarup Mahato, 45, was recovered from the river near Balkhu in the capital city.
The Spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Dinesh Raj Mainali, said that Mahato was living in the squatters’ settlement in the Balkhu area.
Likewise, the heavy rain that happened on Tuesday night triggered flooding in the Bagmati River and all its tributaries including Hanumante, Manohara, Dhobikhola, Godawari, Bishnumati, Balkhu and others.
Mainali said that some of the settlements on the riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley were also inundated.

The locals of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-5 Radhe Radhe, Sangam Colony, Kamerotar land consolidation project were affected by floods that occurred on Tuesday night. Following the flood, locals were engaged in relocating their belongings to safer places and relocating their vehicles to higher ground.
Similarly, underground shops and goods of small industries were inundated. Some individuals managed to save their belongings while others’ belongings were swept away by floods.
Locals alleged that the flood in the Hanumante River was due to the negligence of the Kamerotar land consolidation project and Madhyapur Thimi Municipality.
Likewise, over 70 houses from Balkot to Sirutar of Suryabinayak Municipality were inundated. Marigold English Boarding school and the surrounding settlements were inundated and Balkot road was blocked until 9 AM Wednesday. Not only the road was closed, but schools in those areas were closed due to the floods. Additionally, the parking area of Microbus park in Balkot was also inundated.
Arun Saiju, coordinator of the RNA Group, said that police and locals rescued over 50 people from the Balkot area from 1 AM on Wednesday morning. Bhaktapur witnessed chaotic scenes since Tuesday night.
Flood sweeps away two workers of hydel project in Bhojpur
Two laborers of a hydropower project have gone missing in a flood that occurred Tuesday night in Bhojpur district.
According to the chief of the District Police Office, Yubaraj Timsina, two workers of the under-construction Ikhuwa Hydropower Project in Salpasilichho Rural Municipality were swept away in the flood Tuesday night.
Timsina said that 26-year-old Shyam Kumar Tharu and 30-year-old Ramesh Tharu of Barabardiya Rural Municipality-3 in Bardiya district were missing in the flood.
Ram Kisan Tharu, 26, was rescued from the site and is receiving treatment at Kulung Health Post.
Police said that a search for the missing ones is ongoing.
Sanfe-Martadi highway obstructed
The Sanfe-Martadi highway has been blocked due to a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall. The road was blocked after a landslide in the Nunepani area of Badimalika Municipality-6.
Police Inspector Rabindra Singh Karki said that efforts are ongoing to clear the debris.
As the highway was blocked, long and short-distance vehicles and cargo vehicles have been stranded.
Meanwhile, the Martadi-Kolti road connecting the northeast part of the district has remained closed to traffic for a month now.
Police said the road is closed due to floods in Bauli and Anai rivers along the route and a landslide in Jili area of Badimalika Municipality.
Landslide blocks Kaligandaki corridor
The Kaligandaki Corridor has been blocked due to landslides triggered by incessant rainfall. Incessant rainfall was reported along the corridor since Tuesday evening.
Bijaya Yadav, information officer of the District Police Office said that the road was blocked due to a landslide that occurred at Dablyang, Baglung Municipality-10 of the corridor.
Yadav said that the ongoing rainfall has caused problems in opening the road. In Dablyang, a large area above the corridor is particularly vulnerable, which leads to landslides even during normal rainfalls.
Bensisahar-Chame road obstructed due to landslide
A landslide that occurred at Kharkhare cliff of Bensisahar Municipality-6 in Lamjung district on Wednesday morning has caused vehicular obstruction along the Bensisahar-Chame road section, the District Police Office said.
Heavy rain in the district since Tuesday night resulted in landslides in the area.
Police Inspector Thaneshwor Chapain said that the Kharkhare area is a landslide-prone zone.
People travelling to and from Manang and northern belt of Lamjung have been affected due to obstruction in vehicular movement.
