Govt to focus rescue, relief efforts on Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk

KATHMANDU, May 13: After a 6.8 Ricter-scale earthquake on Tuesday caused additional damage in Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk districts, the government has decided to focus its rescue and relief efforts on those two districts.

An emergency meeting of the cabinet held at the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) at Singhadurbar Tuesday afternoon decided to mobilize additional security personnel to the two districts. "As earthquake continues to cause severe damage in the two districts compared to other quake-hit districts, we have decided to carry out rescue and relief efforts in those two districts with due priority from today. This men that the number of security personnel mobilized in Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk for rescue and relief work will be augmented," Minister for General Administration Lal Babu Pandit told Republica.In the two districts alone, 3,151 people have already died in earthquake since April 25, including 24 killed by Tuesday afternoon's quake.

Similarly, the government has directed the security forces to concentrate their rescue and relief efforts in Kathmandu valley on Sundarijal, Balaju, Manamaiju, Matatirtha and other areas have been ravaged by Tuesday's quake. The government has also directed bodies under it to provide sufficient tents or tarpaulins to the hospitals as the number causalities is likely to go up following Tuesday's quake. Likewise, the cabinet also decided to reopen temporary camp in 16 localities in Kathmandu Valley as the public has again started taking refuge in open spaces following the repeated quakes. The government had first established the temporary camps after the devastating earthquake on April 25. But as daily life gradually returned to normal the temporary camps were closed except for a few, including the ones at Tundikhel and Chuchepati.

Meanwhile, the government also appealed to the public to exercise patience and cooperate with each other at this time of crisis. "The government asks the people to exercise patience and cooperate with each other and even with the authirites at this time of crisis," said Minister Pandit.
