KATHMANDU, March 7: In a major electoral upset, Rajesh Kumar Chaudhary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has claimed victory in Rautahat Constituency No. 1, leaving political heavyweights trailing. Chaudhary secured 28,946 votes in the vote counting concluded on Saturday.

His nearest rival, Ajay Kumar Gupta of CPN-UML, garnered 10,693 votes, while Anilkumar Jha of the Nepali Congress came third with 8,574 votes. Shockingly, former Prime Minister and Nepali Communist Party co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal, a long-time winner from this constituency, finished fourth with just 7,669 votes, according to the Election Commission.
Nepal, who had previously lost only in the first Constituent Assembly election in 2008, had otherwise consistently represented the constituency. His fourth-place finish marks a historic setback for one of Nepal’s most senior political leaders, reflecting the rising influence of the RSP in traditional strongholds.
