Govt says no to export of corrugated zinc sheets to other countries

KATHMANDU, May 16: The Ministry of Industry has prepared a short-term policy for utilizing the corrugated zinc sheets for the temporary construction of the houses in the quake-affected areas.

The policy would come in to effect after the Cabinet endorses it. The recent massive quake of April 25 and several aftershocks have damaged over 500,000 houses and shelters so all the production of the zinc sheets were needed for the purpose.


Prior to this, government has announced to provide two bundles of the zinc sheets to the each quake-affected families.

As many as one million bundles of sheets were needed for the construction of temporary houses. The Ministry sources have stated that only 4,000 bundle of corrugated zinc sheets are being produced from the four factories inside the country.

According to the Ministry sources, there are 300,000 bundles of sheets as a stock inside the country.

Secretary at the Ministry Jay Mukunda Khanal said that they have urged the entrepreneurs no to export the sheets to the other countries in this critical hour.

Similarly, the National Planning Commission (NPC) vice-chairman Prof Dr Govinda Pokhrel said that such temporary houses would be durable for at least two years and Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 would cost for the construction purpose.

The policy would be effective for the construction of the houses, schools, VDC and health post buildings.

The government is planning to complete the construction works of these temporary houses before the monsoon, vice-chair Pokhrel added. RSS
