She only fault was that she is HIV positive. The doctors at the zonal hospital neither dared for Cesarean operation nor they referred Jaharun(name changed), 28, to other hospital.
Jaharun gave birth to a daughter on Thursday morning after her relative took her to B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) on Wednesday evening. [break]
Jaharun, a resident of Bakadhuwa VDC, was admitted to Sagarmatha Zonal hospital after she had labor pain on Tuesday morning.
“She had to be shifted to BPKIHS after the doctors at the zonal hospital refused to attend her till Wednesday evening, informed Jaharun´s husband Rahaman (name changed) “ My wife gave birth to a daughter through a caesarian section at BPKIHS.”
Jaharun´s father in-law informed that BPKIHS doctors treated her normally.
Dilip Sah, a gynecologist at Sagarmatha zonal hospital, said that they could not operate on Jaharun due to the lack of equipments necessary for the purpose.
“We would have carried out the surgery. But, we did not have equipment needed for that,” said Sah. “Operation on HIV patient needs extra operation theater, high-tech helmet and mask, boots among other special equipment.”
Sah added that the operation theater should not be used for the next 24 hours after an operation of a HIV positive patient to avoid infection to other patients.
Jaharun had contracted HIV virus from his husband, who was infected with the deadly virus while he was in Saudi Arabia.
“I know that I was infected with HIV one and half years ago. On returning home, I had unsafe sex with my wife passing the virus to her,” Rahaman repented.
Jaharun had been taking the antiretroviral from the zonal hospital ever since she became pregnant.
