KATHMANDU, May 8: Devotees observe a fast every year on Baisakh Shukla Ekadashi to seek liberation from suffering and sins.

Known as Mohini Ekadashi, this day offers freedom from the illusion of grief and sin, as described in various Puranas. Lord Krishna explained the significance of this Ekadashi to Yudhishthira, according to religious scriptures, said Dr Devmani Bhattarai, a member of the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee and expert in religious texts.

Scriptures also recount that during the Treta Yuga, Lord Ram asked his Guru Vashistha about this fast. In the sorrowful period following Sita's separation, Ram sought his guru's guidance to overcome his grief. In response, Guru Vashistha detailed the importance of Mohini Ekadashi, a story also mentioned in the Ramayana and other texts.

To further explain the significance of this fast, Guru Vashistha narrated the story of a king's youngest son from the city of Sumana Bhadravati, located on the banks of the Saraswati River. According to scripture, those who observe this fast break free from grief, suffering, and worldly attachments.
