Spokesperson for the Ministry of Law and Justice, Tek Prasad Dhungana, said that this initiative has been undertaken so as to facilitate justice adjudication and maintain law and order in society as the State would get information on the status and types of crimes in society through this survey which would help making crime investigation and prosecution effective. The high level task force on criminal law reform that the government constituted under the convenorship of Supreme Court Justice Kalyan Shrestha had submitted a report on this recommending to the government on the need of having a baseline survey on crime.
The work to this end started after the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Khil Raj Regmi, handed over the task force´s report to the Law Minister for implementation.
An steering committee has been constituted under the convenorship of the Secretary at the Ministry of Law and Justice for carrying out the job, Dhungana said. The committee plans to complete the work within a year.
