DHARAN, Aug 18: A COVID-19 patient has been treated through the convalescent plasma therapy for the first time at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan.

An elderly — 67 years old — who tested positive for COVID-19 on Aug 13, received treatment through the plasma therapy on Monday night.

As the health condition of the patient started to deteriorate, the Rapid Response Team at BPKIHS decided to inject convalescent plasma into the patient’s body, according to Dr Sanjeeb Sharma. “This is the first time at BPKIHS.”

Dr Sharma also added that the health condition of the patient has now improved and he is stable.

In this method of treatment, plasma is taken out from a person who has recovered from COVID-19 after 14 days of his/her recovery. As the people recovering from COVID-19 carry antibodies in their plasma to fight against the virus, plasma is injected into the body of the infected person with health complications to fight against the virus. The antibodies help the infected person battle the disease.
