KATHMANDU, Aug 11: Millions of Hindus in Nepal are observing a muted Shree Krishna Janmasthami festival on Tuesday.

Hindus from all around the world, especially those who follow Vaishnavism, celebrate Krishna Janmashtami with grandeur. However, they are observing a muted Shri Krishna Janmashtami festival as coronavirus transmission fear grows.

Shree Krishna Janmashtami is an important festival which is celebrated to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna, and also his teachings. On this day, devotees throng the temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. Patan’s Krishna Mandir is the most revered religious destination in the Kathmandu Valley. This year, the devotees are barred from worshipping inside the temple owing to coronavirus transmission.

The temple has remained closed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, devotees are allowed to pray and offer worship from outside the temple at Patan Krishna Mandir, according to priest Maheshdharma Rajopadhyay.

As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna is seen to have used his superpower since his infancy. He conquered every difficulty that came in his life with his thoughtful action and wit. Devotees visit Krishna temples on this day wishing for success and prosperity in life, and the ability to overcome life’s challenges.

Hindus believe Krishna to be one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu is one of the main deities of Hindu Trinity along with Lord Shiva and Bramha.

According to scriptures, Lord Shree Krishna was born at midnight on the 8th day of the dark fortnight of Bhadra as per the lunar calendar in the Dwapar era. He was born to Vasudev and Devaki, who were imprisoned in Mathura by Kansha, Krishna’s maternal uncle.
