Clean the education sector

Corruption, which has become one of the biggest menaces of the country, has unfortunately not even spared our education sector. A news report that appeared in Sunday’s edition of this paper reveals that schools that exist only on paper have been siphoning off funds from certain District Education Offices primarily that of the Tarai region. Now that the initial investigation by the Department of Education has revealed the prevalence of ‘ghost schools’ in a few districts, the Ministry of Education suspects that what has come out in the open so far may just be the tip of the iceberg and that it might have been funding similar ghost schools in other districts too.

At a time when our existing public schools are in a shambles, and there is a need for more schools to reach the length and breadth of the country, the act of those working together to pocket the state’s funds allocated for education is nothing short of a serious criminal activity. Hence, those involved in siphoning the funds must be brought to book and punished and, at the same time, efforts must be expedited to identify the still unidentified ghost schools.

That such ghost schools mainly exist in districts such as Parsa, Dhanusha and Rautahat is also yet another indication that corruption, which is rife in Nepal, is worse in the Tarai region. This is also a signal that the prime focus of our efforts to address this deadly menace must be the Tarai. Perhaps, it is also an indication that the reach of our state apparatuses in the Tarai is quite weak and serious efforts must be made to strengthen it.

Unfortunately, since this issue does not sound very high-profile, we would not be hearing much about it in the days to come as the chances are that the media too would not be giving it regular space. But we all have to understand that such corruption in the education sector will deny hundreds and thousands of young children their right to education and that is tantamount to playing with the future of the country as they are the ones who will grow up and eventually shoulder the responsibilities of our country. Hence, let us give it the space it deserves and ensure that those involved in pocketing funds meant for public schools are meted out exemplary punishment.

The products of our public schools have played a valuable part in taking this country forward and they will continue to play a very big part in the future. Hence, we can only ignore the government schools, and issues surrounding it, at our own peril.
