KATHMANDU, Aug 27: A fixed amount of government employees' monthly salaries will be deposited into the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.
A secretary-level meeting held today at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers decided to make the contributions to support relief and rehabilitation efforts following significant loss of life and property caused by deadly disasters.
As per the decision, unclassified employees will contribute an amount equivalent to two days' salary from their monthly basic pay; non-gazetted or equivalent employees will contribute five days' salary; gazetted third- and second-class or equivalent employees will contribute seven days' salary; and gazetted first-class and special-class employees will contribute ten days' salary for the month of Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September) to the Fund.
Bill bars local units from recruiting civil servants
The contributions are expected to generate around Rs 360 million from federal government employees for the relief fund.
Additionally, the meeting decided to appeal to employees working in provincial and local governments, as well as all public bodies, to contribute their salaries/wages in the same manner to support the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.
The meeting also decided to intensify search, rescue, relief and temporary shelter arrangements for people affected by the floods.
All ministries and agencies should immediately deploy their resources, equipment and human resources to make disaster management efforts prompt and effective, according to the decision.
Arrangements should be made for staff to work even on public holidays, as needed, to ensure that government and public services continue regularly in disaster-affected areas, the decision states.
The meeting also decided that the concerned ministries and agencies will immediately proceed with the reconstruction of essential infrastructure damaged by the floods, including roads, bridges, drinking water facilities, electricity and telecommunications.
