MUSTANG, Dec 12: The Chinese side has shown interest in upgrading the Beni-Jomsom road.

Track opening of the 72-kilometer road was done by the Nepali Army and handed over to the Department of Roads in 2067 B.S.The interest in the road is reportedly after road access reached the Korala transit under the Kaligandaki corridor. In response, the government gave approval for detailed study of the road to the Chinese side.

A team of eight Chinese engineers and two from the DoR carried out a detailed study of the road, according to Engineer at the District Development Committee Sakaldev Sharma.

Due to poor condition of the road, regular import and export between Nepal and China has not been possible. It may be noted that a team from the Legislature-Parliament had visited the transit point and recommended upgrading of the road.

The Beni-Jomsom remains disrupted for almost two months in a year due to landslides and caving-in at various points of the road. RSS
