TANAHU, July 19: Road upgrading activities related to Mugling-Pokhara road expansion along the Prithvi Highway will be suspended during the rainy season.

Blacktopping and road expansion tasks have been closed and priority has been given to the construction of drainage, culvert and wall, said Engineer of east section under the Mugling-Pokhara Road Project, Bishnu Pandey.

Different activities including planting saplings of different types of plants which might help to stop soil erosion in the landslide prone areas are underway, he added.

Engineer Pandey mentioned, "Landslides and floods might be prevented. Construction activities are being carried out adopting precautions during day time keeping in mind the possible losses of life and property due to landslides."

"Sixty-two per cent progress has been achieved in the east section and 28 per cent in the west section so far. Of the 80 kilometers long road section, around 53 kilometers — 33 kilometers in the east section and 20 kilometers in the west section -   have already been blacktopped," he said.

Pandey further said the road expansion work was underway by dividing the highway in two sections — a 41.7-kilometer long section  towards the east and a 38.88-kilometer long section towards the west.

Engineer of the west section of the project, Narayan Poudel, said other activities are being carried out by stopping blacktopping tasks as monsoon becomes active from mid-June to mid-October.

According to the Road Project office, the task to upgrade the highway into a four-lane was underway with the loan assistance of the Asian Development Bank. The east section is being constructed at a cost of Rs 6.21 billion while the west section at Rs 7.40 billion, added to the project.
