KATHMANDU, Dec 26: After a relatively warm December thus far, Kathmandu Valley residents have finally received their first real cold spell, thanks to Friday morning´s rainfall.

Due to the low-pressure system forming in the middle and eastern regions of the country, the hilly regions of the country, including the capital, saw the rainfall. [break]

Although a fall in temperature was noticed, experts believe the rain itself will not last.

“The cloud formation are due to local pressure systems forming in our own hills, so it is unlikely the rain will continue,” says Shiva Nepal of the Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Ministry of Environment.

Nepal added that the skies may remain cloudy for the next few days.

The rainfall has reduced the Valley´s maximum temperature considerably, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division. But the pressure system isn’t strong enough to give continuity to the drop.

The cold wave enters Nepal when wind from the Mediterranean starts flowing east. As this is not yet the case, the rainfall and cold weather is still a local phenomenon.
