CHITWAN, Aug 12: Bharatpur Cancer Hospital, in a glaring case of negligence, on Thursday removed the uterus of a woman who had come for a throat operation, mistaking her for another woman.

Chham Kumari Bohara, 32, of Shankarnagar-3, Rupandehi, who is suffering from throat cancer, had come to the hospital for thyroid gland surgery. But the doctors removed her uterus, mistaking her for one Kesh Maya.[break]

The widow and mother of a 14-year-old daughter had undergone thyroid surgery at the same hospital four months ago also and had returned for a follow-up as the problem persisted. Bohara´s brother Laxman Khatri, who was waiting in front of the operation theater since 8:30 in the morning, was surprised when the nurses called out for relatives of Kesh Maya to take away the patient following around four hours of surgery.

“I later learned that Kesh Maya was to have uterine surgery but they performed it on my sister instead,” Khatri disclosed. Khatri said the hospital administration told him that a team led by Dr Jeetendra Pariyar had performed the surgery but they refused to divulge the names of he doctors involved to the media.

Executive Director of the hospital Dr Laxmi Narayan Singh called it a major blunder and said he has already formed a probe committee to investigate. A doctor at the hospital claimed that this was not just oversight by a few but everybody including the anesthesia team and staff involved in changing clothes for the patients must have erred.

“We will bring the gynecology unit under the purview of investigations,” said Dr Dej Kumar Gautam, member of the probe committee and the only one authorized to speak about the incident.

The Uterine surgery for Kesh Maya has been delayed following the incident while Bohara has yet to regain consciousness. Bohara´s family has demanded action against the guilty doctors, compensation and full treatment for the patient.
