Bisket and Sindur Jatras: Glimpses of two timeless festivals


1.     Locals carrying khat (palanquin) during Sindur Jatra at Layeku in Madhyapur Thimi, on Sunday. Thirty-two khats are processed through the streets of Madhyapur Thimi on this festival that is observed on the second day of Baishakh, the first month according to Nepali calendar, welcoming the Nepali New Year. People celebrate the procession throwing orange-colored powder, playing Dhimey (traditional Newari musical instrument), and dancing and walking with oil lamp.

6.     Kashi Bhairav chariot being pulled by locals during Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur, on Sunday. The festival is called Biskaa Jatra in Newari (bi means snake and skaa means killed). When the erected Yoshin pole is pulled down, devotees start pulling chariot during the festival.
