KATHMANDU, Oct 20: One of the patient’s relatives has accused Bir Hospital for medical negligence after the doctors at the hospital said that the donor's kidney was not suitable for transplantation during the time of surgery.
Chameli Gaire from Galchhi Rural Municipality-2, Dhading, was undergoing dialysis for about six months. Gaire’s mother-in-law Juthi Sarki agreed to donate one of her kidneys after the family decided to lead a comfortable life with a kidney transplant. For the past 3 months, both the donor and the patient were undergoing various tests for the transplant.
Grueling 4-hour kidney transplant successful: Doctors
Last Tuesday, the doctors took the mother-in-law to the operation theater and removed her kidney. The family members said that during the transplant of the daughter-in-law's kidney, which was rejected after the health examination, the transplant was not done because the kidney did not match, while Jeet Bahadur, Gaire's husband complained of serious negligence on the part of the hospital and the doctors.
On Tuesday, the surgery for Gaire's kidney transplant started at 10AM. Relatives said that they were only informed that the transplant could not be done, at three o'clock in the afternoon. The relatives of the patient accused the doctors of negligence for not informing about the incident and demanded action against the doctors involved.
The hospital has asked Dr Prabin Shrestha of the surgery department to investigate the incident. Similarly, a seven-member committee has been formed under the coordination of Dr Shrestha. Today, a discussion is underway between the doctors involved in the surgery, the patient's relatives, and the hospital administration.
Due to Gaire’s poor economic condition, the rural municipality had also helped in her treatment. Gaire from Galchhi Rural Municipality-2 was also elected as a female member in the local elections of 2017.
