High court seeks reasons for releasing Lamichhane on bail

On Tuesday, the bench of Judge Raj Kumar Khatiwada ordered that a reasoning report be presented regarding the decision to release Lamichhane and the seven others, who were made defendants in the Suryadarshan Cooperative fraud case.

KATHMANDU, Jan 21: The Pokhara High Court has ordered the submission of a report including the reasons for releasing seven people on bail, including the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rabi Lamichhane.


On Tuesday, the bench of Judge Raj Kumar Khatiwada ordered that a reasoning report be presented regarding the decision to release Lamichhane and the seven others, who were made defendants in the Suryadarshan Cooperative fraud case.


The High Government Attorney Office, Pokhara, filed a petition at the High Court on Monday demanding that the district court’s order be revoked and those released on bail and be kept  in custody, stating that the lower court's order to release them on bail was inappropriate.

On January 9, the Kaski District Court ordered the release of Lamichhane and six others on bail. The court demanded a bail of Rs 6.5 million from Lamichhane, while different amounts were demanded from other persons.


The six people were released on the same day after paying the bail amount, followed by Leela Pachai the next day. The highest bail of Rs 8.8 million was demanded from former DIG Chhabi Lal Joshi.


The court demanded a bail of 3.7 million from Leela Pachai, Rs 1.5 million from former police officer Ram Bahadur Khanal, Rs 500,000 from former UML provincial assembly member Meena Gurung, Rs 100,000 from Meena's father Krishna Bahadur Gurung, and Rs 500,000 from Aarti Gurung.


Along with the Suryadarshan Cooperative case, Lamichhane has also been released in the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case after paying a bail of Rs 6 million. Similarly, the Kathmandu District Court has demanded a bail of Rs 5 million from Joshi on Monday. He is also in the process of being released.


On the other hand, another case has also been registered against them in Rupandehi on the charge of Supreme Cooperative fraud.
