KATHMANDU, Feb 3: The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the authorities to present a detailed report on the petition filed at the apex court against the order of the Patan High Court to release cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane.
The hearing was held by the bench of Supreme Court Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal against the order of the Patan High Court to release Lamichhane on a bail of Rs 2 million. After today’s hearing, the single bench of Justice Phuyal ordered to seek the report including the decisions of the district and appellate courts on Lamichhane’s case.
7 appellate courts to become high courts
On September 6, 2022, a 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint at Gaushala Police Station, accusing Lamichhane of raping her in a hotel room. Lamichhane surrendered to the police on October 6, 2022. He has been denying the allegations leveled against him. After the debate, the bench of District Court Judge Madhav Prasad Ghimire ordered Lamichhane to be kept in jail until the case was settled.
Then Lamichhane filed an appeal at the High Court Patan saying that the order of the district court should be annulled. A joint bench of Patan High Court Judges Dhruvraj Nand and Ramesh Dhakal on Thursday overturned the order of Kathmandu District Court to keep Lamichhane in jail pending trial and ordered his release from prison on a bail of Rs 2 million under 10 conditions. But the Attorney General's Office knocked on the Supreme Court doors against the order.
The rape case against Lamichhane is pending at the district court in Kathmandu.
