DOLAKHA, Feb 21: After sweat beads were spotted on the Bhimsen idol at Bhimsen Temple in Dolakha district on Thursday morning, the local administration informed the Office of the President about the incident, urging it to perform atonement worship at the temple.

It is believed that the ‘sweating’ of the Bhimsen idol is a sign that ‘something disastrous’ is going to happen in the country. After sweat beads are seen on the idol, the tradition requires the head of state to perform a special Puja seeking forgiveness from Lord Bhimsen.

The Bhimsen idol at the Bhimesn Temple located at Bhimeshwar Municipality-2 ‘perspired’ from 6.25am to 8.30am Wednesday, according to the District Administration Office, Dolakha.

As a part of the tradition, a team led by Sudarshan Shrestha, deputy chief district officer, is preparing to visit the Office of the President on Friday to hand over the cotton pieces – used to collect sweat beads from the idol.

After the team hands over the cotton pieces to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, the Office of the President will send Puja materials to perform atonement Puja (worships) at the temple. Likewise, the Ministry of Home Affairs is also preparing to send Puja materials to the Bhimsen Temple on behalf of the government.

Earlier, during the time of the monarchy, the kings used to send Puja materials to the Bhimsen Temple to perform atonement Puja.

While the main priest Kasi Prasad Shretha entered the temple for a morning Puja on Thursday, he saw the idol had turned ‘black and shiny’, and was ‘perspiring’ from the right and left sides.

According to eye-witnesses, the sweat drops were clearly seen on the idol. “When I reached the temple, I saw the idol “sweating” from the right and left sides. The idol perspired for two hours,” said Biraj Man Shrestha, ward chair of Bhimeshwar Municipality-2.

According to a historian Thirtha Narayan Joshi, the Bhimsen idol perspiring is a sign of an upcoming disaster or turmoil in the country. “The past shows that the idol has perspired before a turmoil in the country,” he said, adding that history shows the Bhimsen idol started to perspire during the regime of the then King Girvan Yuddha Bir Bikram Shah Dev.

Earlier, the Bhimsen idol ‘perspired’ on September 26, 2017 from 2.55pm to 5.15pm. Likewise, the idol ‘perspired’ four times before the 2015 Gorkha earthquake.

The idol had also ‘perspired’ before the royal massacre, people’s movement, among many other political developments.
