ILAM, Nov Dec 1: Limbu language that is written in Sirijanga script has been declared official language by Mangsebung Rural Municipality - 5. Perhaps this is the first time an ethnic language has received the status of official language in the country.
ILAM, Nov 17: Negligence of the contractor has put Dudhang bridge of Ilam-Soyang-Nayabazar road section in limbo. Although the deadline has been extended twice, the completion of the bridge is still uncertain.
ILAM, Oct 25: The government is working to set up an immigration office at the Pashupatinagar checkpoint in Ilam district to allow foreign tourists to enter Nepal through the checkpoint. Local entrepreneurs said the checkpoint would hugely benefit the tourism sector in eastern Nepal.
ILAM, Oct 23: Visitors from across the country plan to visit Ilam to enjoy the scenic view of Kanyam’s lush landscape and tea gardens. Sunrise and sunset from the location are also equally fascinating. However, relishing to the views of the snowcapped mountain ranges is less acknowledged at llam. Nonetheless, the mystic mountain of Ilam is overshadowed by the tea gardens and agro-tourism. The majority of visitors are apathetic to the features the further hills flaunt.
ILAM, Oct 2: Renuka Chauhan of Ilam Municipality-9 stayed in Kathmandu for some months for his son’s treatment after her son was diagnosed with brain tumor last year. In the meantime, her husband Chandra Prasad Chauhan brought home a young woman stating that she is a distant relative. Enraged, Renuka filed a case of polygamy against him at the district court. The district court however did not find her husband and released him. However, recently it has surfaced her husband has fathered a child with the woman and that they were indeed in a serious relationship.
Ilam sees a big influx of tourists, especially during September and October. The eastern province of Nepal -- notable for tea plantation -- is also renowned as a religious destination. In addition to embracing natural beauties the region holds, a large number of devotees also visit Ilam citing its religious values.
ILAM, Sept 6: Tea workers of eastern Nepal have launched a protest against tea industries following the latter's reluctance to pay them minimum wage fixed by the government.Though the government has revised the minimum wage twice, industries are still paying farmers as per the earlier wage structure.
ILAM, Sept 2: On September 29, 2002, Khadananda Adhikari of Paanchthar’s Yangwarak Rural Municipality-1, Chyangthapu was shot dead while walking. His family members saw the brutal scene of him being shot by 36 bullets. “Why was my husband killed?” questioned his wife Homa, adding, “I have been asking this question for the past 12 years but have received no answer.”
ILAM, Aug 28: Though the government’s minimum wage for workers came into effect from the month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August), tea workers were deprived of the increased wage in the first month of Fiscal Year 2018/19.
ILAM, July 31: Introduction of the semester system in masters' level programs by Tribhuvan University has affected student enrollment in campuses affiliated to it in the hilly districts of the eastern region. In some campuses, the number of enrollment in the masters programs has gone down to zero.
ILAM, July 26: While border disputes along the no-man's-land in eastern Nepal have continued for years, the government authorities are yet to make any concrete effort to resolve the issue with the southern neighbor, India.
