Over 1,000 houses inundated in Morang, 3 persons missing

BIRATNAGAR, July 14: Two persons went missing and more than 1,000 houses were inundated in Morang district due to flooding from the Lohandra River on Saturday.

The missing have been identified as Shova Soren of Kathari-4 and Adarsha Poddar of Jahada, according to District Police Office (DPO) Morang. This brings to three the number of missing in the flooding in the district so far. On Thursday, a youth went missing in the Geuriya River in Kanepokhari-2 along with his motorcycle.

Raj Kumar Kheuju, the spokesperson at the DPO, stated that the search for the missing has been intensified. The flood has wreaked havoc in the district, with more than 1,000 houses inundated, and 4,237 people have been displaced so far, according to police. The level of water in the river is yet to recede and there are likely to be more displaced.

It is learned that Wards No. 1,2,6,4,7,8,11,12,15,16,18 and 19 of Biratnagar Metropolitan City have been affected by the flooding. People rendered homeless are sheltering in schools and public buildings. According to the metropolis, the displaced have been provided relief through their respective ward offices.

Meanwhile, a team of local representatives led by Biratnagar Mayor Bhim Parajuli has inspected the submerged areas. The swollen Singhiya River entered human settlements after breaching the embankment. Similarly, the embankment of the Bakraha River in Ratuwamai Municipality-10 was also damaged by the river.

Most of the displaced lived near the banks of rivers. The overflowing river has also entered agricultural lands. The displaced locals have been provided relief from the local units and various other organizations.
