SPORTS BRIEFS: Gurung promoted as top-class taekwondo referee

KATHMANDU, Sept 14: General Secretary of Nepal Taekwondo Association Deepraj Gurung has been promoted to super class referee on Wednesday.



Gurung, the head coach of Nepali taekwondo, was promoted by the World Taekwondo Federation to the highest class of referee for his long-standing contribution to taekwondo. [break]



There are 200 members in the federation and only 48 referees from 20 nations are in the super class. Gurung is in the 31st position among the 48 referees. Gurung is the one and only super class referee from South Asian countries. To get the degree of super class referee, one has to pass regular exams of taekwondo and it takes more than 35 years to complete it.



Veteran volleyball player Bista passes away


KATHMANDU: Veteran volleyball player Ram Kumar Bista passed away at the age of 54 years on Wednesday. Bista, who had participated in the 1978 and 1982 Asian Games, was suffering from lungs disease. Bistawas undergoing treatment at Patan Hospital. He had played volleyball for more than 15 years from Jawalakhel Youth Club. Bista was a quick spiker of the national team. He is survived by seven dughters and a son.



NSC to award karate coach


KATHMANDU: National Sports Council (NSC) has decided to award senior karate coach Hira Singh Dangol with a cash prize for winning silver medal in the 38th Top of the World Karate Championship in senior individual kata category held in the USA some four months ago. NSC Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama said that Dangol had attended the championship at his personal expense and brought home medal. “We will be happy to award him with the cash prize as a token of love,” said Lama. Dangol will receive Rs 100,000 from the NSC. Dangol, a former national coach of Nepal, had defeated a player of Venezuela in the league round and defeated a player from the USA in the semifinal. Dangol lost the final against a USA player and had to settle for silver medal. Dangol had also played the role of judge in the Junior Youth Olympics and US open Karate Championship.
