BHAIRAHAWA, Sept 25: A Tarai armed outfit leader was shot dead Friday night in Rupandehi district during a cross fire with the police.

Ishtiyak Ahmad Musalman, alias Shaitan Singh, a central committee member of Jantantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha (JTMM), an underground armed group operating in Tarai, was killed in police firing in Gonaha village near the Bhairahawa-Lumbini road.

Police said they had to retaliate against JTMM cadres after the latter opened fire on them during night patrolling. Ishtiyak, a resident of Belahiya, Siddhartha Municipality-1, was active in extorting local businessmen from India, police said.

Police have seized a pistol and two grenades from Ishtiyak. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sher Bahadur Basnet, other JTMM cadres managed to flee after Ishtiyak was killed. Police have sealed all check points to arrest them.
