KATHMADU, April 30: UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, estimates some 2 million women and girls of reproductive age – including some 126,000 pregnant women -- are among those affected by the earthquake that struck Nepal.

Women and girls are among the most vulnerable populations. "To address their needs, UNFPA has rushed the delivery of reproductive health kits, which contain the supplies required to support safe childbirth," says Giulia Vallese, UNFPA Country Representative. "UNFPA is also providing dignity kits, containing essential hygiene supplies for women and girls of reproductive age."In times of upheaval or natural disasters, pregnancy-related deaths and gender-based violence soar. Many women lose access to essential reproductive health services and give birth in appalling conditions without access to safe delivery services and lifesaving care. UNFPA is addressing these needs in the days, weeks and months ahead.

UNFPA is working with the Government of Nepal and partners also to prevent gender-based violence, which is known to increase in the aftermath of disasters, including at camps set up for displaced citizens.

UNFPA has long supported the Government of Nepal during previous times of crisis, including the 2014 August floods and landslides.
