BAGLUNG, Dec 22: Two district prisons in Dhaulagiri zone are overcrowded, making it problematic for inmates to sleep and eat comfortably. Though the government has planned to develop prisons as correction centers, lack of proper infrastructure has made the prospect a pipedream.

All three district prisons have the capacity of accommodating 25 men and seven women. But the district prison in Baglung has 42 inmates, of which 35 are men. Similarly, Myagdi district prison has 44 inmates, of which 41 are men. Only the Parvat district prison is running close to capacity. It has 30 inmates, including 26 men.

“All prisoners are kept in the same room,” said Nar Bahadur Adhikari, an inmate leader. This causes additional problems when someone falls ill. In case the illness is contagious, the problem becomes serious.
