Newa Lahana, Kritipur
Just in case your experience of Newari cuisine has been limited to chhoyelas and baras, you owe this community kitchen a visit. Even those who have grown up on a regular diet of Newari food have given Newa Lahana their seal of approval. From the extensive menu to the traditional haku patasi clad women, this place couldn't be more reminiscent of the Newar culture.
Hona:cha, Mamaru Galli, Mangal Bazar
Hona:cha rose to prominence back when fine dining was an alien concept in our country. In its decades of existence, Hona: cha has not only served the locals but royalties as well. Still this eatery has more than a rich history to brag about. Its Sukuti sadeko, hakku chhoyela, aalu jhol, bara, and dyakula have been called 'incomparable' by the regular customers.
Nepali Chulo, Lazimpat
In the lavish setting of their Rana style palace, Nepali Chulo can offer a dinner and a show.
The food here is always served to you in proper sequence while you enjoy watching traditional dances and though a tad touristy, you can expect authentic flavors. The wild boar, in particular, comes highly recommended.
Wanjala Moksva, Naxal
At first impression itself, Wanjala is a delight. Unlike other restaurants where you have no choice but to eat in the same room, Wanjala offers separate, cozy semi huts with ample privacy to entertain your own party. No wonder it has gained so much popularity among various offices. Then of course there is the food, simply finger licking delicous.
Sasaa, Sagal Tole - 5, Kirtipur Ring Road
The ambiance is precisely how you would expect it to be: traditional and rustic. A glimpse at the menu should also leave you content as it offers a wide variety of Newari dishes and then some more. Sasaa is built on the essence of age old recipes, but they are also open to shaking things up by, for example, hosting birthday parties and bringing in live music acts.
Kasi, Durbar Marg
They call themselves a venue for authentic Newari cuisine, great ambience, and a relaxed atmosphere in the heart of the city. Located centrally at Durbar Marg, they not only serve good flavor and food for the taste buds but great views of landmarks in Kathmandu, and every now and then, good music too.
Bhumi, Lazimpat
A great sekuwa, chhoyela, lungs or bone marrow: What are you in a mood for? Don't mistake Bhumi for one of those posh places that's scared to get their hand dirty. Backed by Indian mains, Bhumi goes all the way to satisfy their customers with their selection of Newari snacks. The dishes here are without fuss but savory.
Newa de café, Thamel
Newa De Cafe is obscured at the back of a small plaza immediately north of the entrance gate to Kathmandu Guest House. We actually wouldn't blame you if you missed it at first glance. The place isn't much on the outside but as its regulars will attest, the all Newari menu makes the place worth a visit. Newa De Cafe has become famous for being incredibly easy on the pocket. But don't fret, they are wary about hygiene as well.
Paalcha Newari Kitchen, Jawalakhel
Upon arrival, you might wonder if Paalcha really is a Newari restaurant. It's contemporary interior and modern approach to dining is definitely not what we have come to expect from most Newari eateries, however it makes for an interesting juxtaposition. Their food has authentic flavors, the staffs are courteous, and the price too is very reasonable.
Votoo, Anand Bhawan, Lazimpat
Vootoo is more a bar than restaurant, but that's just fine. The menu has a wide variety of Newari (as well as some Nepali) snacks which are tastefully prepared. Refreshingly unlike majority of the Newari restaurants around town, Votoo's menu also consciously caters to the less carnivorous. They have a wide variety of vegetarian options as well. You can just grab a drink, lounge in their terrace, and enjoy the sumptuous bites.
This vegetable curry has bold flavors to keep everyone happy
