KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Vegetables prices witnessed substantial upheavals this week, as hindrance in transportation while bringing vegetables from neighboring districts impacted supply situation in the Kathmandu Valley.

Prices of major seasonal vegetables like local cauli, Tarai cauli, red radish, white radish white, cabbage and pumpkin among others have increased in the wholesale market by as much as Rs 10 per kg, while green peas have become cheaper by Rs 14 per kg due to improved supplies over the past week.[break]

According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB), price of seasonal vegetables has increased because of lack of proper supply from the neighboring districts. Likewise, price of some vegetables has decreased due to low demand in the market.

Geeta Parsad Acharya, a wholesaler at Kalimati vegetables market, said low supply and high demand for seasonal vegetables is the major reason behind the rise in prices. In normal season, around 500 metric tons of vegetable enters into the valley daily from neighboring districts if supply system is smooth.

This is said to be enough for the valley, but still prices of some vegetables have increased due to the lack of supply from the neighboring districts.

The wholesale price of cauli local has reached Rs 25 from Rs 17 per kg, Tarai cauli reached Rs 10 from Rs 18 per kg, tomato big reached Rs 25 from Rs 20 per kg and cabbage reached Rs 18 from Rs 16 per kg.

Likewise, price of green peas has dropped to by Rs 14 per kg, making it Rs 30 per kg the price of carrot too has dropped from Rs 32 per kg to Rs 25 over the period of one week. Similarly, price of bottle gourd has dropped to Rs 23 per kg from last week´s Rs 26 per kg.

However, prices of some vegetables such as dry onion, white potato, red potato and leafy vegetables remained unchanged over the period.
