BIDUR, Nuwakot, June 29: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said on Friday that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai should resign immediately and pave way for the formation of national consensus government.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Nuwakot chapter of Press Chautari, Khanal stressed that PM Bhattarai should step down from his post to give the country a political outlet. [break]

Accusing PM Bhattarai of being arrogant after returning from the Rio+ summit in Brazil, Khanal expressed his doubts that there could be ´foreign forces´ behind the PM´s ´highhandedness´.

Unless Bhattarai resigns as PM, UML would not discuss about any other options with the government, the UML chairman said. He was also of the opinion that the prime minister had no right to dissolve the Constituent Assembly (CA) and declare fresh CA polls.

Khanal  charged Bhattarai, also a vice-chairman of UCPN (Maoist),  with trying to buy more time to cling on to power and appealed to all to rise against the Maoists´ ´wrongdoings´.

The country will suffer more in the hands of Bhattarai, Maoists and Madhes based parties should they continue to be ´not flexible´ for political consensus, he said.

A national consensus government should be formed under the leadership of Nepali Congress, Khanal said, adding his party is ready to support an NC candidate for premiership.

"Should the NC fail to nominate a candidate for prime minister,  UML is ready to file candidacy for the post," he added.
