KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Director of the Health Insurance Board, Dr Raghu Raj Kafle, has resigned from his post. He submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister through the Ministry of Health.
Kafle, who hails from Tanahun, was appointed to the Health Insurance Board during the tenure of then Health Minister Pradeep Paudel.
Dr Kafle appointed Director of Health Insurance Board
His resignation comes at a time when the board is under mounting pressure due to a growing burden of health insurance payments. Several major government hospitals have already issued notices announcing the suspension of services under the health insurance programme, while others are preparing to do the same.
The Health Insurance Board has outstanding payments of over Rs 11 billion to service provider institutions. However, the Ministry of Finance has made it clear that it cannot provide additional subsidies if the programme continues under the existing model.
Due to the lack of necessary government support, the health insurance programme itself has fallen into crisis.
