KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Supporters of the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Nepali Congress (NC) on Sunday staged a demonstration at Maitighar, demanding the resignation of Election Commission (EC) Executive Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari.
Hundreds of cadres loyal to the Deuba faction gathered at Maitighar Mandala, displaying placards calling for Bhandari’s resignation and urging the authorities to “protect democracy.” The protesters also chanted slogans demanding the annulment of the EC’s decision to recognize the Gagan Thapa-led party leadership.

The Deuba faction has rejected the Special General Convention held from January 11 to 14, that elected Thapa as the party president, arguing that it was conducted in violation of the party statute.
Prior to the protest, leaders of the faction filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court challenging the EC’s decision, though the hearing is not expected to begin for several days.
The street protest by a faction of the country’s largest political party comes amid a deepening legitimacy crisis within the Nepali Congress.
