SPORTS BRIEFS: Tops, New Diamond, APF win

KATHMANDU, Jan 9: Tops Academy of Pokhara, New Diamond Academy and Armed Police Force (APF) won their respective matches on Monday in the Seventh Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament.



In the matches played at New Buspark court on Monday, Tops overcame Angel´s Heart 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-9. New Diamond defeated Chandeshwari Youth Club from Ramechhap 25-9, 25-19, 25-8, while APF beat Angel´s Heart 25-8, 25-10, 25-18.[break]



Greenfield reaches semis


KATHMANDU: Greenfield School entered the semifinals of the Third Teresa Academy Inter-school Basketball Tournament in junior boys´ category on Monday.



Greenfield thrashed Gyan Niketan 31-13 as Dinesh Khadka scored 11 points for the winning side. With Greenfield progressing, the semifinal line-up for the tournament is now complete. Greenfield will take on the host, Teresa, while Awareness International Academy will meet Odyssey in the semifinals. In the senior girls´ category, Gyanodaya will lock horns with Teresa for the title.



Karate team off to Dhaka


KATHMANDU: A 20-member karate squad left for Bangladesh on Monday to participate in the Second Fazilatunnesa Mujib International Championship. The squad comprises 17 players and three officials. Parshuram Bastola and Subhadra Shrestha will compete in the men´s and women´s individual kata. Mande Kaji Shrestha, Ganesh Bahadur Thing and Kedar Bahadur Simkhada will compete in the men´s team kata, while Subhadra Shrestha, Chanchala Danuwar and Sangita Dangol will compete in the women´s team kata.



Likewise, Bijay Lama (50 kg), Sunil Lama (55 kg), Binod Maharjan (60 kg), Mukunda Maharjan (67 kg) and Lekhnath Mainali (75 kg) will represent Nepal in the men´s kumite. In the women´s kumite, Malika Thapa Chhetri (45 kg), Anu Adhikari (50 kg), Roji Nagarkoti (55 kg), Laxmi Bhatta (61 kg) and Ganga Devi Adhikari (68 kg) will compete in the tournament. Deepak Shrestha is the coach and manager of the team, while Dorje Lama and Ganga Ram Maharjan are other coaches.
